Stolen Yogurt

Last Thursday I ate yogurt from the fridge at my work. I thought it had been there for weeks and therefore was fair game. However when I went to work next, on Saturday, there was a note on the fridge saying that a yogurt was stolen. The note made it clear that it was stolen in the evening shift. Although I wasn’t the only one to work that shift,  I do have a reputation for being hungry and eating leftovers others offer me. My co-worker acted cold to me that day.

There was another yogurt in the fridge on Saturday. So I guess my co-worker brings a yogurt everyday to work but eats it secretly and then replaces it. That’s practically a set up.

Self-promotion

(Update on the rats: they are getting more bold. One ran by my feet this morning in the bathroom.)

Commenting on popular blogs, or websites, is a way for little blogs to gain a better following. In most comment systems, the commenter can plug his own site, usually as a link ‘attached’ to his name, along with his comment. This is free advertising, and to an audience that likes reading blogs enough that they’re even reading the comments.

Some give themselves away as being primarily interested in promoting themselves. This is an example:

Some comments are so simple that I would feel too ashamed to attach a link, yet many do. If a comment is lacking in depth then the blog it links to must also.

The best way to do this is to write well written comments that contribute greatly to the discussion at hand. A good commenter is always appreciated by both the blogger and by his fellow commenters, even if they disagree with him. This way a commenter establishes himself and his blog as worthy of respect. Otherwise I won’t go out of spite.

Thanks for the link, Carmen! An interesting discussion has been going on in the comments at that post.

I’m new to blogging, and your site has been a big inspiration.

Un Cannolo per mangiare non per éssere

There’s a word post on my tumblr declaring myself a ‘cannoli’. As it explains, the inspirations for such were the food metaphors used by other Americans, like oreo and twinkie. The point was that, like the delicious sicilian desert, I was light brown on the outside and white on the inside.

I’m rethinking this. Both terms used as an example (and those are the only examples that come to mind) are used in different ways, in different contexts, and by groups with very divergent experiences from what I was trying to get across. Although it’s easier to appropriate something well known and understood, it is better for an idea to be expressed clearly and precisely. Cannoli, although perhaps passing clever, doesn’t convey with clarity my ethnicity. Tony Soprano’s term ‘Wonderbread Wop’ serves this purpose better as it at least grounds Italian-American identity in bread, a culinary staple, rather than in the foggy idea of what an IA should look like.

The best path would be to resist labels and a weighty termonology and just examine my childhood.

The rest of what was said, in the tumblr post, I still like.

Rats in attendence.

I can hear the rats in the walls. I can hear their tiny feet as they run, hear them fall when they slip. I hear them eating at the wood and drywall, turning cracks into passages. Sometimes they can be seen, running from under the fridge to their tunnels below the cabinets, or down their hole in the bathroom. My fear is that they touch me while I sleep, or that they inbreed and make more. We have no money for traps, let alone an exterminator, or I don’t at least. What I’m doing now is playing the waiting game. Hopefully they die soon.

Android wordpress app

Surprisingly the wordpress app for my phone is not only easy to use but also useful. Apps like that are rare for an android, although it might just be because of how terrible this HTC hero is. Anyway, very impressive.
It actually makes me want to blog.
